Southern California, in many ways, is a true melting pot. Cultures come together here, meld and sometimes result in these really cool hybrid people. As a kid, though, it can be a little confusing to be surrounded by so many different cultures and to be part of a family that isn’t super tied to any one. I think my sisters and I struggled with that a little but in the end I think we identify most with our Hispanic heritage – probably because it’s the easiest to grasp.
And also that is where I feel like our most solid traditions originated. I’m honestly not sure they are Hispanic in nature but because so many of the things we learned as kids are still present today, they’ve stuck with us all to some degree. Some of my favorite memories of growing up are holiday mornings at my grandparents’ house. We’d often gather there on holidays and my grandparents would be in the kitchen together making hot chocolate and donuts, usually talking to one another in Spanish so we didn’t understand what they were saying.
It’s these same memories that I hope to leave my children with – I’m telling you, nothing is better than Christmas morning at Papa’s house. As time passes and life happens, those childhood traditions are the thing to which I hold most tightly.
The best ever hot chocolate was made on those magical mornings. It was my grandparents’ secret recipe and to this day I’m not totally sure what goes in it but I’ve tried to recreate that feeling that went along with it. Over the years, I’ve come up with a combo that works for me and even added some delicious espresso flavor along the way. And Nestle chocolate from Walmart is always my go to fave – because it’s what grandma used.
Mexican Mocha
Here’s what you need:
1 tab (hexagon) of
, to taste
3 tbsp (skip this one for little ones)
3 cups whole milk (could also use coconut or almond)
Here’s what you do:
1. Heat milk and chocolate in saucepan, stirring until melted and combined.
2. Add instant espresso and stir until no lumps remain.
3. Add sweetened condensed milk to coffee mugs.
4. Stir and top with whipped cream and ground cinnamon.
And that’s it, friends. Such a simple way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month and just family in general. Hot chocolate in ceramic mugs in front of the fire? Ah-mazing. Or, you know, if it continues to be a million degrees, pour the whole thing over some ice. That’s also delish.
Keep up on all things Nestle by following them all over social media.

What cherished family memories. It’s amazing what a Nestle cup of hot chocolate can remind us of! My own children always think of their grandparents when ever we have hot chocolate. Lucky for us, los abuelos are just a quick drive away! #client
