Target’s Toy Emporium

CB-disclosure

Around here, October signals the beginning of birthday season which feeds right into Christmas. So basically we are headed into the busiest, most expensive, part of the year. Sigh. I’m really not sure I’m ready.

As the boys get older, they have a lot more to say about birthday and Christmas gifts. Which, in some ways, is awesome but in others tons more complicated. We take lots of trips to Target this time of year so I can get a firm handle on what it is that they really want.

As you can see, they are pretty LEGO obsessed at the moment. Unfortunately, they haven’t quite wrapped their brains around the “big boy” sets so we stick close the LEGO Jr line. Otherwise, we’d be using the Kragle all the time to keep the fancier creations held together and safe from the almost 4-year-old.

The coolest thing about toy shopping at Target is being able to shop online in their Toy Emporium. All the great stuff you can find in stores AND some things you can’t. It’s the perfect way to pick up all those gifts without risking the kids seeing what’s happening.

One thing I decided recently that we definitely needed is a table for the boys to build their LEGO creations. You can definitely buy one, but they can be so expensive. This SUPER EASY version we made cost less than $30. It’s not the fanciest thing ever but it matches our playroom furniture and the boys love it.

What You Need:

Small Table (ours was about 22″ x 22″)
4 LEGO 10″ x 10″ Building Plates
Gorilla Glue
8 4×2 LEGO bricks for placeholders

What You Do:

1. Clean table according to Gorilla Glue instructions.

2. Lay building plates out on table. Use bricks to ensure proper spacing. The plates shouldn’t be right up next to one another – the LEGOs won’t lock on them this way.

3. Mark (in pencil) corners for building plate placement.

4. Glue around outside, bottom edge of building plates and press in place on table. Replace bricks to ensure proper spacing.

5. Allow glue to fully dry.

And that’s it! An simple LEGO table that will cost you less than $30 and 20 minutes. It really doesn’t get better than that! Here’s the table in action . . .

Rather then glue, which will ruin the table and possible the Lego baseplates when they are removed, use some 3M Command Picture Hanging strips – which have velco in them. For example:

Kristin – it’s from Ikea. We already had one but they are really inexpensive.
